Providing
accommodation for international students in the Netherlands is the
responsibility of the concerned Universities and Colleges. However, this is
not always the case. Most of the universities don’t have their own
accommodation facility (hostels). Therefore, accommodation facility varies
from university to university. More information on accommodation can be

In most of the
cases when, students are funded by NUFFIC fellowships, universities itself
arrange for students accommodation, therefore students don’t have to
bother on this matter. However, privately funded students are supposed to find
their own accommodation in external apartments.
Students can
hire external apartments, either furnished or unfurnished. Furnished
apartments are generally not within the reach of the students in terms of
cost. Non furnished apartments are comparatively cheaper and thus
affordable. Apartment generally consists of a living room, kitchen,
bathroom and a bedroom. Depending on the size of the apartment, students
can also share apartment among friends. However external apartments are not
readily available in major cities like Amsterdam or Rotterdam. In many cases students have to
wait for 3 to 4 months before they actually get any apartment. Therefore,
if you are planning to live in external apartments, it is wise to make
prior contacts three or four months before you arrive in the Netherlands
either through the University or any other personal contacts.
